THR talked to the twin from Miami who almost won the game.
Liz Nolan came up short on Big Brother 17, but her runner-up status was still a feat, considering she and her twin sister weren't even supposed to be on the CBS reality competition.
"We were supposed to be on another show. They told us, you're auditioning for a show, it's kind of like Big Brother, Amazing Race and Survivor," Liz's twin sister, Julia Nolan, told The Hollywood Reporter at Wednesday's live season finale.
So, did the "Twin Twist" come to the two blondes from Miami, or did they land in front of the Big Brother producers as a golden opportunity to bring back season five's memorable twist? Said Julia, "It was called The Twins Project, but I literally just found out that wasn't a real show. I'm so happy that they liked us! We made it onto Big Brother; that is pretty amazing." THR talked to Liz about her move to Los Angeles and why she didn't stick to "Have-Not" punishments.
What do you think you could have said in your finale speech to change the jury's mind?
Oh my gosh, Steve, I don't know if you guys knew this, but he completely shocked me. He and Vanessa, for days, said they were taking each other. So I was shocked, I had nothing prepared. If I could have prepared myself a little more, I don't know what I would have said, but I would have highlighted that I did this with a twin sister, and I held my own. I did the best I could, and I'm really happy with my performance.
What did you think about Austin having a girlfriend before he went in the house?
Oh, my God.
You know she's outside waiting for you, right?
Stop! Is she really? Is she really? You're lying. Oh my God, you got me! (Laughs.) I'm scared of the girlfriend, stop it! Where is she? Zingbot pointed that out, and that was the worst because I didn't want to hear that, and he had a lot of explaining to do, telling me they weren't together anymore. The girlfriend was a big hurdle, but he asked me to be his girlfriend! So I think I won that one.
Are you fully committed to keeping the showmance alive outside of the game?
Yes! Let's keep the showmance alive! Me and Austin were such an unlikely duo, and it was really cool to see our love story unfold. It was not love at first sight; it definitely took awhile. I love Miami, but I'd love to live in L.A. I have no reservations.
Would you live in Los Angeles for Austin or other reasons?
For other reasons! First of all, Austin is a great reason, but the weather in Miami sucks. I'm sick of it. Born and raised in it, enough.
Are you going to split any of the $50,000 with Julia?
Yeah, probably. I'm not allowed to say it, but we did this thing together. We deserve both of the rewards!
When you were on slop then switched with Julia and went to a different sequester, did you still have to do the "Have-Not" punishments?
I can't believe they let us get away with that! That would be my favorite thing ever because I would be moping and pouty for two days, and then I was like, "Peace, see ya!" I only did slop for the full time once. The first time I did it, we were switching in and out, and I only had to do it for three days, and I was not complaining. I put on a very good poker face.
Speaking of poker face, Vanessa's over there. ...
Yeah, what is she, she won millions of dollars?
If she won the money, do you think she would have gambled with it?
That girl had me fooled. I kind of knew she had a poker background, so it wasn't that much of a surprise, but I don't know what she would have done with the money. A lot of it probably would have gone to poker and partying. Hell, yeah. I can't wait to party with her!
How do you respond to past players who may not be a fan of yours?
It's like that with everyone, right? And everyone has their fans? That is such a hard question because they have lived in these shoes, they know this life, but every season is different, past players! People are different in the house, feelings, emotions, and I did the best that I could do. I would just say, worry about your own damn self. What the hell?
You're watched on the live feeds 24/7. Is there any moment in the house you might regret?
The first I heard is Sigmund Freud — everyone is making me funny over that! It was Julia, it wasn't even me! I still don't know who Sigmund f— Freud is. Now I hear that he's a philosopher? I'm scared of things people have to say about that. I know I'm embarrassing, but I laugh at myself. My mom said that I kissed Austin too much, and people on the live feeds said, "Ew." You're in the house 98 days of not getting any, whatever. Sorry, not sorry!
Julia talked about how the "Twin Twist" came to be. How did it all come to be?
I don't know how we decided to go with Liz over Julia. It was just a lot of deliberation back and forth.
What was the deciding factor? Did the producers decide?
No, we decided. It was completely all of our decision. I'm glad that it happened that way because I won more competitions than her. Not to toot my own horn, sorry Jul. She should have won more.
Why do you think you didn't win "America's Favorite HouseGuest"?
I thought I was going to win, God! I knew James or Johnny Mack would win. James was hilarious! Johnny Mack — if I tell you guys this, I don't know if you'll believe it, but he was the most boring person in the house. He was not funny, he was just a complete bore. I guess he was hilarious in the diary rooms. I don't know what he was doing in there.
What was it like before you entered the house on press day, hiding that you had a twin? Didn't Rachel Reilly ask about it?
Rachel asked, and I was so shocked. I was like, "No, what are you talking about?" I lied. Of course I'm going to lie because I didn't know what I was allowed to tell. I think I did a great job of covering it up. The house was so hard because once they found out, it was literally impossible to keep it going.
What is one question someone hasn't asked you that you want to talk about?
How difficult it was to switch in and out of the house. No one has asked me that. It was so difficult having to put it on and shut it off, put it on and shut it off — all the paranoia was really hard to do what we were doing. I felt so sad when people found out. I felt like a failure, and I was about to give up, and I'm really glad I didn't because I made it to final two.
Before you entered the game, you told THR you weren't impartial to becoming a reality star. Do you still want to pursue a career in entertainment?
I do. I would love to be on Amazing Race; how cool would that be? But Survivor, hell, no, I could never do that. Maybe down the line Real Housewives, and I'll have my red short haircut.
Real Housewives with Austin or somebody else?
Real Housewives of L.A. with Austin! Duh! We'll still be Liztin. That's not a CBS network though, so maybe CBS will have something for me down the line, we'll see!
Everyone puts a lot of attention on Shelli and Clay for their age difference. You and Austin have a big age difference. Why don't you think they talk about that?
[We] have a bigass age difference, but yeah, I'm younger. It's so different with the girl being older with the guy; the world is mean! Also, I think guys are way less mature than girls, and she's really mature for her age and probably ready to settle down soon, and he definitely isn't.
Austin told Julia he's coming to your family Christmas dinner. What should he bring to impress your parents?
My parents are Italian, and you guys saw how much I cooked in that house. We are the biggest cooking family. He has to bring some delicious Italian food because we love fattening pasta, even though he's really health-conscious, so I don't know what the heck he can bring.
What should Austin bring for the Nolan Christmas dinner? Were you happy Liz made it to the final two? Do you think she should have won? Sound off in the comments below.
