Big Brother 18 is almost here. According to casting director Robyn Kass, this year's cast has been notified and now it's just a matter of time until they're rounded up, sequestered, introduced to the world and enter the house. But what twists await them?
Every season Big Brother adds some new twists into the game. And with no returning players for the past three seasons (unless you count Rachel's sister), it may finally be time for veterans to play the game again. Or not. There are always rumors that the show will do another All-Stars season and every year those rumors are proven false.
So what wild speculation does the Internet have for Big Brother 18? Here are four of the most popular theories spreading around, but take them all with a huge grain of salt.
30 Houseguests?
One of the most popular rumors on the Internet is that Big Brother 18 will start with more houseguests than ever before, as many as 30. This is something past winner Derrick Levasseur and others suggested in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. However, don't freak out because if it's true, then the two-night premiere would likely feature a competition or some other method of trimming it down to the usual 16 or even 18 HGs.
What makes this theory seem particularly true is the fact that the premiere, airing Wednesday, June 22, will be two hours, followed by part 2 of the premiere on Thursday, June 23. Usually the premiere is just a single hour, so why the need for the extra time? Having more HGs would certainly explain the need for three hours of television to kick off the season, presumably with the nominations and probably Battle of the Block on Sunday, June 26, the first Power of Veto on June 29 and the first live eviction episode Thursday, June 30. It doesn't take three hours just to introduce HGs and choose the first HoH.
Fans vs. Favorites
Every year there are rumors about returning HGs and they are almost always wrong. The show hasn't had returning players for the past three seasons and Julie Chen frequently shoots down the idea of another All-Stars season, but maybe a mix of newbies and veterans (like seasons 13 and 14) could happen. Presumably it would be half and half, though as we saw in the past, the veterans usually have a way of dominating the game and controlling the new HGs.
The only hope would be if the new players were actual fans, people familiar with the veterans and how they play the game. If the house is full of recruits who have never seen the show, there's really no hope for them.
Relatives
Another rumor revolves around using the relatives of former HGs, either playing against newbies or playing against their veteran loved ones. Like Fans vs. Favorites, this has been done quite successfully on Survivor with Blood vs. Water and could be great for Big Brother too. Like season 6, it could mean that everyone in the house would know someone, which seems more fair than having some of the HGs have a previous relationship with each other while others don't.
Second Chances
When it comes to potential All-Stars, the most popular rumor is that they wouldn't be the usual winners and successful players like Rachel Reilly or Daniele Donato. Instead, the rumors suggest that it could be a Second Chance opportunity for HGs who were eliminated early in their seasons, people like Jason Roy from Big Brother 17 or Big Brother 16's Amber Borzotra.
This would be ideal because if the season is a mix of newbies and veterans, the newbies would be at less of a disadvantage if all of the veterans are people who didn't play particularly well the first time and got evicted early. Experience is always key, but it would be a fair fight if none of the veterans have made it to the jury or played in a double eviction.
Of course it's entirely possible that none of these rumors will come true. Big Brother doesn't like revealing anything, even going as far as to recruit "mock houseguests" this season for a six-day trial run in the house. Will there be returning players? Will there be 30 HGs on the first night? Will the show introduce another "twist" like the BB Takeover that they stop doing in week 3 because it's super lame?
Big Brother 18 premieres Wednesday, June 22 at 8pm on CBS. The cast will be revealed Monday, June 13.
